Behind the scenes studio processes series: Designing our jumpsuits

One of the most popular styles we have launched in 2024 and one of the hardest sustainable clothing items to get a good fit on: it is of course our jumpsuits.

Here’s a little peek at the design / test fitting process of creating our jumpsuit patterns.

Louisa + I have worked super hard at getting the fit just right for this very long awaited new garment style. We’ve been putting off designing + creating the patterns for these for about five years but honestly I am pleased we did as we are, of course, always learning + improving. We are much better designers/makers now + I think this is reflected in the final fit.

First of all we discussed the overall look we were going for with each jumpsuit style as well as the adaptations to existing pattern designs we’d need in order to create it.

We love a challenge so we decided to go for four different jumpsuit silhouettes inspired by some of our existing best selling designs:

The Classic Jumpsuit based on our Classic Trousers design with relaxed but slightly tapered legs

The Wide Leg Jumpsuit based on our Wide Leg Two-Piece design with full length flared legs

The Culottes Jumpsuit based on our Culottes Two-Piece design with cropped flared legs

Lastly our Shorts Jumpsuit based on our Shorts Two-Piece design with short flared legs

We did quite a lot of maths – I feel like people never talk about just how much maths is involved in designing ethical clothing. Then we drew up the pattern for the first toiles (sample garments) and cut them out for three team members in fabrics each of individually chose.

We decided to throw ourselves in at the deep end + cut + sew the first samples in proper fabrics (versus scrap fabric – we usually use old curtain linings – no fabric waste remember?!) up in our sewing room + luckily the samples were all fine so it paid off. Phew!

Normally we would sample new designs at least two or three times but it just wasn’t necessary on this occasion – I think because we’ve worked so hard on the fit of our bodice + trouser(etc) patterns over the years so we’d already done the majority of the hard work fit-wise which has massively paid off on this occasion.

We each tried on our sample jumpsuits then headed out for a photoshoot ahead of our pre-order launch offer. Each of us went for different features for our jumpsuits to test them out and to provide the most inspiration for you lot when you’re designing your first jumpsuits.

Since then we have added four more jumpsuit designs: Classic Strap Jumpsuit, Wide Leg Strap Jumpsuit, Culottes Strap Jumpsuit and the Shorts Strap Jumpsuit so there is a lovely big range to choose from now!
