Small frilly

A small frilly headband is a headband that has been covered in fabric and sewn to create a small frill coming from the headband creating a halo effect. We can make your small frilly headband from your chosen fabric - you can order yours here

Big frilly

A big frilly headband is a headband that has been covered in fabric and sewn to create a big frill coming from the headband creating a halo effect. You can choose your own fabric to use and order yours here

SCRUNCHIES

A gathered circular band of fabric-covered elastic used for fastening the hair. We can make your scrunchie from your chosen fabric - you can order yours here

POUCHES

A rectangular pouch bag which has a metal zip along the long side. The pouches are lined with quilted calico cotton for body and shape. Frills are an optional addition. We can make your pouch from your chosen fabric - you can order yours here

PURSES

Purses are small coin purses which are made from our vintage fabric off cuts. They have a metal clasp closure on the top and a rounded base for the bag underneath to hold coins etc. We can make your purse from your chosen fabric - you can order yours here

HANDBAGS

Handbags are a bag that is medium in size and has a metal clasp at the top where a strap hangs from and a rounded base for the bag underneath. We can make your handbag from your chosen fabric - you can order yours here

LAPTOP CASES

A rectangular bag which has a metal zip along the long side of the bag. The laptop cases are lined with quilted calico cotton for protection and shape. We can make your laptop case from your chosen fabric - you can order yours here

UNATTACHED SUSPENDERS

Unattached suspenders are dungaree straps that are separate to a garment and attach via either buttons and buttonholes or clips to the waistband of the garment. They are attactable at the waistband or the garment and run up the body sitting on the shoulders. They stitched at the back where they cross over for stability. They are available as a separate accessory or as part of a garment. You can design yours here

UNATTACHED SHOULDER TIES

Unattached ties are not sewn to the garment and are decorative ties that can be attached in a bow at the shoulder seam of a garment

Alterations

A service we offer to our customers if you find your garments do not fit just right or how they expected, or if your body changes over time. Alterations for ‘design your own’ garments are part of the price of the original garment if the customer lets us know immediately when they receive the garment (must be within one month of the shipping date). Alterations requested outside of this window are subject to charges. Please contact us via Instagram DM or email info@theemperorsoldclothes.co.uk for any alteration queries. Please note we only alter Emperor's garments

Ankle cuffs

Ankle cuffs are cuffs that are put onto the end of loungewear trousers. They are non-elasticated and function to keep the cuffs rolled up

A series of loops that are attached to the waistband or coat that can hold a belt or tie

Classic Bib

Bib is the classic rectangular shape

Tapered Bib

Bib is tapered to be smaller at the top by two inches. This shape is popular with larger busts/chests as it reduces bib gaping

Sweetheart Bib

Bib is shaped along the top edge to have a rounded dip in the middle like the top of a heart

Big Green' (Emperor's slang)

‘Big Green’ is Emperor's slang for Alice’s strap tiered dress in green cotton. Features of ‘Big Green’ include thick straps, strap frills, extra length and pockets. You can design yours here

Big Red' (Emperor's slang)

‘Big Red’ is Emperor's slang for Cecily’s strap tiered trapeze dress in red cotton. Features of ‘Big Red’ include thick straps, extra length to the ankle and pockets. You can design yours here

Bodice Styles

Classic waistline

Dress bodice length ends at the natural waist

Empire waist

Dress bodice length ends above the natural waist, just under the bust line

Super empire

Only available on Nightwear. Bodice Length ends above the bust line

Wrapover

Bodice front is cut into two halves diagonally that wrap over each other creating a V neck. The skirt of a wrapover garment has two skirt fronts which attach to the two bodice fronts. Garment is fastened with inner and outer ties

Boilersuit style jumpsuit' (Emperor's slang)

‘Boilersuit style jumpsuit’ is Emperor's slang for a jumpsuit which is reminiscent of a boilersuit. Features of our boilersuit style jumpsuit include classic neckline, front zip fastening, classic pockets, shorts sleeves, patch pockets and classic leg. You can design yours here

Bow types

Decorative neckline bow

A large bow at the neckline of garment which is sewn in place on top of the neckline and is non functional

Functional Back Neck Bow

Two large ties that are at the back of the garment neckline that tie the two sides of the back of the garment together to create a bow

Ties down the front of the top/bodice

Small ties that tie together to form small bows that hold the front of a top or bodice together. They are placed at the neckline, the mid bust and the waist

Ties down the back of the top/bodice

Small ties that tie together to form small bows that hold the back of a top or bodice together. They are placed at the top of the back neckline, the mid back and the waist

Ties down the side of the top/bodice

Small ties that tie together to form small bows that hold the sides of the top or bodice together. They are placed at the armhole, at the waist and at a midpoint between those points

Brocade (fabric type)

A lux woven fabric with an intricate raised or embossed pattern. Often the raised motif features metallic or shiny threads. Brocade can be made out of many different fibers such as cotton, silk, taffeta, synthetic fibers and metallic threads.

Broderie Anglaise (fabric type)

A woven cotton or cotton mix base fabric with surface embroidery and holes with stitching around them, usually making up a floral or border pattern. Comes in a wide variety of patterns, weights and colours although most commonly the stitching is the same colour as the base fabric.

Business dungarees’ (Emperor’s slang)

‘Business Dungarees’ is Emperor's slang for classic dungarees which have been made in a more formal or traditionally business style fabric. Fabrics used include wools, suitings, pinstripe or block colour and often do not have added features, keeping the silhouette of the dungarees more streamlined. You can design yours here

Cecily trousers' (Emperor's slang)

‘Cecily Trousers’ is Emperor's slang for a pair of Cecily's classic trousers. Features of ‘Cecily Trousers’ include side seam pockets, cropped length, elasticated waistband and leg hem frills. You can design yours here

Cheesecloth (fabric type)

A loosely woven cotton fabric. Single layer cheesecloth is usually fairly lightweight, has small gaps in the weave and is translucent. Double layer cheesecloth (double gauze) is two layers connected together in the weaving process, still a lightweight fabric but less visible holes in the weave and more opaque. Cheesecloth also has a crinkled texture, which is seen as one of its charms.

Circular packaging

At Emperor’s we use circular packaging to try to reduce our environmental footprint. We use reusable bags made from a plastic canvas which is hardy enough for multiple uses. We ask UK customers to please send back the packaging if they have no use for it - for the cost of a stamp - so we can reuse the packaging. Customers outside of the UK are asked to re-use the packaging as they see fit or if they are feeling generous, to post it back to the UK. We appreciate this may not be financially or physically viable for all customers

Cropped Jacket

The Cropped jacket design is a jacket that has been cropped to the waist. The cropped jacket has a classic neckline which meets at the neck with the fronts of the jacket meeting without overlapping. There are no fastenings with this jacket. Cropped jackets are customisable with collars and sleeve type. Cropped jackets are lined. You can design yours here

A-line coat

The A-line coat is our coat design that combines the classic bodice with a A line skirt which gently flares out following the shape of a capital A. This coat design is inspired by our A-line dress design. The coat opens at the centre front and is fully customisable with choice of fastening, collar or hood additions, sleeve type and choice of pocket options. All coats are lined. Skater coat

The skater coat is our coat design that combines the classic bodice with the volume of a full circle skirt. This coat is inspired by our skater dress design. Tiered coat

The tiered coat is our coat design that combines the classic bodice with the volume of a tiered skirt. The tiered skirt is created by gathering and sewing three different tiers of fabric together to create volume that gets wider and flares out more at each additional layer. This coat is inspired by our tiered dress. The coat opens at the centre front and is fully customisable with choice of fastening, collar or hood additions, sleeve type and choice of pocket options. Trapeze coat

The trapeze coat is our second coat design that has no waist seam. This coat flares out from the bust causing lots of volume as the coat flares out. This coat is inspired by our trapeze dress design. The coat opens at the centre front and is fully customisable with choice of fastening, collar or hood additions, sleeve type and choice of pocket options. All coats are lined. Large pointy collar

Square collar

A square collar that is cut in a square bib shape. It is made from two fabrics stitched together and is sewn to the neckline of the garment. Contrast cuffs

Contrast cuffs are fabric that is sewn the inside of trouser garments leg hems which are revealed when they are folded up. Extra length can be added to trouser legs to give space to show contrast cuffs whilst not losing too much trouser length. Contrast cuffs are available in limited block colours. Main fabric can be requested as an off menu charge

Corduroy (fabric type)

A densely woven fabric with parallel ridges on the surface to create its distinctive texture. Often made from cotton or cotton mix fibers. Comes in a wide variety of weights, drapes and ridge sizes.

Corset-style crop top' (Emperor's slang)

‘Corset-style’ crop top is Emperor's slang for classic crop top or strap crop top which has been deliberately cut to have a front gap reminiscent of historical styles of corsets or stays and use the feature of front bow tie fastenings to tie the top closed. Features of ‘corset-style’ crop tops are for a classic crop top; deep square neckline, front ties, 2 to 4 inch gap at centre front. On a strap crop top the features are; deeper neckline, front ties, 2-4 inch gap at centre front. You can design yours here

Cotton (fabric type)

A breathable, natural woven fabric that is made from the fibers of the cotton plant. Comes in a wide variety of weights and textures.

Cotton-mix (fabric type)

A woven fabric that combines cotton with other fiber types. Sometimes synthetic fibers, such as polyester or elastane. Sometimes natural fibers, such as wool, silk or viscose. Comes in a wide variety of weights and textures.

Crotch Reinforcement

Crotch reinforcement are cotton panels that are sewn into the crotch of a garment. This strengthens the crotch of a garment to help with the wear of the fabric and helps with longevity of the garment. Crotch panels come in two different weights: classic for medium to heavier weight fabrics and lightweight for lightweight or very drapey fabrics. Black or white crotch panels are chosen based on the main garment fabric

Drape

Drape is a term that refers to how fabric hangs under its own weight. Drape can drastically change the feel of a garment and is important because it affects the garment’s fit and style.

A-line dresses

The A-line dress is our A-line design that combines the classic dress bodice with our A-line skirt. The skirt of the dress flares out from the waist and follows the shape of a capital A. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, ties, fastenings, frills and pockets. You can design yours here

Mini dresses

The mini dress is our design that combines the classic bodice with a mini skirt. The skirt of the dress is fitted and straight and usually is hemmed at above the knee. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, ties, fastenings, frills and pockets. You can design yours here

Pencil dresses

The pencil dress is a design that combines the classic bodice with a pencil skirt. The silhouette of a pencil dress has a fitted skirt which follows the shape of the legs and is hummed just under the knee in length.There is an black slit approximately 5 inches to aid in movement. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, ties, fastenings, frills and pockets. You can design yours here

Shift dresses

Our shift dress design is a straight cut dress with no waist seam which has minimal shaping and hangs from the shoulders. This dress has no fastenings as it is a loose fit dress. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, frills and pockets. You can design yours here

Skater dresses

The skater dress design combines the classic bodice with a full circle skirt. The skirt of the dress is cut in the shape of a circle giving lots of volume while keeping the waist smooth as the skirt flares out. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, ties, fastenings, frills and pockets. You can design yours here

Tea dresses

The Tea dress design combines the classic bodice with a gathered skirt. The skirt of the dress is cut in the shape of a rectangle and is gathered into the waist seam giving lots of volume throughout the skirt. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, ties, fastenings, frills and pockets. You can design yours here

Tiered dresses

The tiered dress design combines the classic bodice with a tiered skirt. The skirt of the dress is cut into three sections of fabric which are gathered and sewn together to create volume with each layer. Tiered Trapeze dresses

The tiered trapeze dress design combines the trapeze dress with a tiered dress. The entire dress is cut into three sections of fabric which are gathered and sewn together to create volume with each layer. Each layer adds to the volume, causing the tiers to flare out more at each tier. Each tier is flared in a trapeze style. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, frills and pockets. Dungarees

The classic Emperor’s dungaree design is a combination of our classic Emperor's trousers and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the trousers. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The trouser part of the dungarees is a high waisted trouser which has a comfortable ease around the hips and down the leg while also following the line of the leg and tapering in gently. The trousers have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. Dungaree-culottes

The dungaree culottes design is a combination of our culottes design and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the culottes. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The culottes part of the dungarees is a high waisted trouser with a more fitted silhouette around the waist and hips which then falls down straight from the hips to a cropped length. Culottes usually are hemmed at the mid calf. There is no tapering of the trouser leg. The culottes have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. You can design yours here

Playsuits

The playsuit design is a combination of our shorts design and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the shorts. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The shorts part of the dungarees is a high waisted short with a more fitted silhouette around the waist and hips which then falls down straight from the hips to a mid thigh length. There is no tapering of the shorts leg. The shorts have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. You can design yours here

Wide leg dungarees

The wide leg dungarees design is a combination of our wide leg trouser design and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the wide leg trousers. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The wide leg trouser part of the dungarees is a high waisted wide leg trouser with a more fitted silhouette around the waist and hips which then falls down straight to the ankle from the hips. There is no tapering of the trouser leg.The wide leg dungarees have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. You can design yours here

Dungaree dresses

Our dungaree dresses are dresses which have our dungaree features of clips, buttons and clips or buttons and buttonholes with front bib straps that cross over at the back. The skirts of these dresses can range from our mini skirt, A-line skirt, gathered skirt and circle skirt. All dungaree dresses can be customisable with choices of frills, shoulder ties and pockets. Elasticated options

Waistband

Elastic added to the back of an extended waistband to allow a fluctuation in size. Elasticated waistbands can have an extra three, five or eight inches to allow garment to stretch for comfort and body needs. Or we also offer a fully elasticated waist available for garments in suitable fabrics - please get in touch to find out more about specific fabric suitability

Loungewear and PJ waistband

Waistbands for loungewear and pyjama garments have more elastic in the waistband to give them more ease for taking on and off as these styles have no zips. Elastic starts in the waistband at mid leg and works round the back of the waistband to the other side mid leg

Straps

Elastic added to extended straps at the back under the crossover where the two straps meet to give more ease of movement and to make dungaree garments more comfortable and pull less when seated. This is a popular addition to those who spend a lot of time seated

Extra tall waistband

Extra tall waistbands are an off menu item that is available on request. Standard waistbands on our skirts and trousers are 4 cm tall. Extra tall waistbands are approximately 10 cm but height can be chosen by customers. There is a surcharge of £15 for an extra tall waistband. If you are interested in upgrading your waistband to an extra tall waistband, please get in contact.

Poppers on Coats

Metal snap fastening. Two connecting parts of the popper to fasten the two front edges together

Buttons + buttonholes on Coats

Buttons holes sewn on one side of the front edge of the coat. Plastic buttons sewn onto the other opposite front edge of the coat.

Buttons + buttonholes on Jumpsuits

Buttonholes sewn onto the shoulder strap overlap. Plastic button sewn on to the other end of the shoulder strap.

Fastening-Waistband fastening types

Popper

Metal snap fastening. Two connecting parts of the popper to fasten the waistband together.

Hook + bar

Metal fastening. Two connecting parts of the hook and bar perfect for waistbands with elastic.

Hidden zip fastening

Zip is sewn into the fold of the classic pocket. Moving the zip from the side seam to the mid leg. Zip is hidden from view by the pocket bag. Poppers + Hooks and Bars are used to secure the waistband.

Fastenings for dungarees

Classic clips

Metal clips attached to the end of the straps that clamp onto the edge of the bib fabric. Metal sliders attach to the straps so you can adjust the length as needed

Buckles + metal buttons

Metal buckles that clip onto the metal button. Metal buttons attached to the bib fabric. Metal sliders attach to the straps so you can adjust the length as needed

Buttons + buttonholes

Button holes sewn into the bib fabric. Plastic buttons sewn onto the ends of the straps. Metal sliders attach to the straps so you can adjust the length as needed

Attached shoulder ties

A type of strap that ties on the shoulder to create bows. Attached shoulder ties on the front of dungaree items come from the bib or front waistband. The back ties come from the back waistband, cross over the back where they are secured with stitching and tie at the shoulder to the front ties.

Trapeze fit

Boxy fit

Boxy fit is where a crop top is cut with extra ease in the body and waist of a garment. The shaping of the garment in more square and boxy than regular fit

Flannel (fabric type)

A soft woven fabric. Usually made from cotton or cotton mix fibres. Has a fuzzy finish on one or both sides. Also can be called brushed cotton.

An Emperor’s flash sale is when ‘design your own’ garments are on sale for a limited time only. The offer details can vary, but usually the discount is 15% off. Customers need to reserve fabrics and place their orders using the discount code within the sale allotted time. Flash sale discounts can only be used on new reservations made within the sale time period and are not available on the silk chiffon fabrics. Circle customers have an extra 24 hours access to the sale

Floor to ceiling' (Emperor's slang)

‘Floor to ceiling’ is Emperor's slang for referencing when a fabric is being used for a garment that is being designed to cover the whole body. For example, a full length trapeze dress with classic neckline and extra length to floor length. Another example could be one fabric being used for a two-piece which has full length trousers and a cropped jacket

A folded short frill that sticks up straight from the neck hole

Downward neckline frill

A single layer frill with a turn over hem that hangs downwards from the neck hole

Chest frill

A folded short frill that sits horizontally through the chest line, about 4 inches down from the nape of the neck

Armhole frills

A folded short frill that sticks out from the armhole. It tapers at the start and finish of the frill and wraps from the front of the armhole up and over to the back of the armhole

Sleeve Hem Frills

A single layer short frill with a turnover hem attached to the hem of a classic or gathered sleeve

Sleeve hem frills on cuffs

A folded short frill attached to the cuff of a puff sleeve

Bib frills

A folded over short frill that sticks out of both sides of the bib. No frill at the top edge of the bib

Full gather

Full gather is when the gathered fabric at the waist of a gathered skirt, teadress, tiered dress or other dress-style with a gathered waist is double the amount of fabric than the bodice waist measurement. This gives the skirt a full look

Minimal gather

Minimal gather is when the gathered fabric at the waist of a gathered skirt, teadress, tiered dress or other dress-style with a gathered waist is one and a half times the amount of fabric than the bodice waist measurement. This gives the skirt a more smooth appearance and straighter silhouette

Hi-low

Hi-low skirt and dress silhouettes are where the skirt hem is asymmetrical with the back being longer than the front. The length difference can go up to 30cm/ 12 inches maximum depending on your preference.You can select our hi-low hem options alongside the rest of your preferred garment features when you design your own garment

Hoodie crop top' (Emperor's slang)

Hoodie crop top is Emperor’s slang for a crop top which has been made in our loungewear sweatshirting with an additional hood. Loungewear can only be made with classic necklines and are relaxed fit. Features of an emperor's jumper often include ¾ puff or full length sleeves and sometimes include a deep hem frill to extend the length. You can design yours here

Hoods

Hood is made from the main fabric of the garment. Hoods are only available on coats, jackets and loungewear designs. Hoods can be requested on other garments as an off menu feature. May depend on fabric. Hoods on coats and jackets are lined. Loungewear hoods are not lined

IG Live (Instagram live stream): IG live refers to Instagram live broadcasts in which team members show new fabrics, designs or features to customers. Live broadcast viewers can write in questions and comments in real time which will be answered by the team member hosting the live. Lives are most commonly in the late afternoon/ evening and are saved to our @emperorscloth account where they can be rewatched at any time

Loungewear jumpsuits

Loungewear jumpsuits are available to design in all four of our jumpsuit silhouettes: classic, culottes, wide leg and shorts. Linen (fabric type)

A breathable, natural woven fabric that is made from the fibers of the flax plant. Comes in a wide variety of weights and textures. Linen also has the tendency to wrinkle, which is seen as one of its charms.

Garment lined, either fully or partially with a fine cotton fabric. Black or white is chosen based on the garment's main fabric

Fine Cotton Lining Contrast colour

Garment lined, either fully or partially with a fine cotton fabric. Contrast colour lining available upon request

Cupro lining

Garment lined, either fully or partially with a cupro lining. Cupro lining colour is chosen based on the garments main fabric. Cupros is a natural fabric made from cellulose fibres. It has a more drapey feel than cotton lining

Liquid drape (Emperor's slang)

Liquid drape is Emperor’s slang for reference to the feel of certain drapey fabrics. It is often used on Instagram lives when a fabric has a particular drape which falls like liquid.

Louisa teadress (Emperor's slang)

Louisa teadress is Emperor's slang for Louisa’s tea dress in lime green linen. Features of a “Louisa tea dress” are square neckline, ¾ puff sleeves, a longer length skirt and a classic hem frill. You can design yours here

The Loungewear crop top is a top which has been made from our loungewear sweatshirting. Loungewear can only be made with classic necklines and is relaxed fit and has no fastenings. Mix and match garments are where two or more fabrics have been used to create a single garment. Mix and match can be used in multiple ways including: bib and straps on dungaree or strap garments, top and bottom of two pieces, bodices or sleeves on dresses, front panels of a focus fabric or using mix and match frills. Neckline types

Classic

Classic neckline is high up on the chest hitting just below the hollow notch at the front of your throat with the back hitting the nape of the neck

Round

Round neckline has a slightly lower more scooped front with the back hitting the nape of your neck

V-neck

V-neckline finishes lower on the chest with two straight sides coming to a point to resemble a ‘V’ shape with the back hitting the nape of the neck

Square

Square neckline finishes at the mid chest and has a square shape at the front with the back hitting the nape of the neck

Sweetheart

Sweetheart neckline finishes at the mid chest and has a scalloped shape that resembles the top of a heart at the front with the back hitting the nape of the neck

Round neck front and back

Round neckline front and back - Round neckline has a slightly lower more scooped front and a scooped back which finishes a few inches below the nape of the neck

V neck front and back

V-neck front and back - V-neckline finishes lower on the chest with two straight sides coming to a point to resemble a ‘V’ shape as well as a ‘V’ shape on the back

Square neck front and back

Square neckline front and back - Square neckline finishes at the mid chest and has a square shape at the front as well as a square shape at the back finishing around the mid shoulder blade

Needlecord (fabric type)

A type of corduroy fabric with thin parallel ridges on the surface to create its distinctive texture. A woven fabric often made from cotton or cotton mix fibers. Comes in a variety of weights.

Gathered nightgown

The gathered nightgown is a night dress which has a separate bodice and skirt which connect at a waist seam. The bodice of the night gown can be designed to have the bodice length in three different styles. The bodice comes in classic bodice length(where the bodice finishes at the waist), empire (where the bodice finishes just under the bust line) and super empire length ( where the bodice finishes at the upper bust/ chest line). ‘Off menu’ is a term used to describe a design feature which a customer requests from us that is not part of our usual designs.’Off menu’ involves a surcharge that will reflect the extra time + work that ‘off menu’ items require. ‘Off menu’ requests are subject to production availability and capacity at the time of the customer request. Organdy (fabric type)

A lightweight woven sheer, stiff fabric, usually made of cotton. Organdy is given an acid treatment to keep its crisp and starched finish.

Organdy options

Organdy garments are made with organdy fabric. They are very stiff garments that are semi sheer. Organdy can only be used for skirts, dresses and tops

Unlined garment

An unlined organdy garment has no linings and is therefore semi sheer. This style can be used as a layering piece in your wardrobe

Cotton lined garment

A cotton lined organdy garment is a garment that is made with organdy which has been lined with our cotton lining to stop the garment from being see through. There is a surcharge to add this on top of the lining the garment charge. A choice of colour is available. You can purchase the surcharge here

Another main fabric lining

An organdy garment with another main fabric for its lining is when an organdy garment is made with a lining fabric which has been chosen from the back catalogue.There is a surcharge to using a main fabric as a lining fabric. You can purchase the surcharge here

Mix N Match (add a feature) to a garment

Mix and Match organdy feature is when a garment uses the organdy fabric for a mix and match garment. Organdy features can include sleeves, frills and skirts on dresses. You can purchase the surcharge here

Party pants' (Emperor's slang)

Party pants is Emperor’s slang for any emperor’s trouser style which has been made in a fabric which is often associated with party wear. Fabrics used include fabrics with metallic threads woven throughout the weave, silks, satins, taffetas and other party fabrics. You can design yours here

Pay what you feel

‘Pay what you feel’ is the option to choose what price you’d like to pay for certain products including resale garments and other limited items on the website. This option involves a minimum price which is stated under the ‘choose your price’ box. Customers can opt to pay above the minimum price if they have the means to

Payment plans

Our payment plans are designed to help split the cost of design your own garments into more manageable payments. Our payment plans can be split across 2-6 months. Select the ‘Pay deposit’ option at the bottom of the garment page when placing your order to create a payment plan. Your payment plan garment will be added to the production queue, created and shipped after the final payment has been made. Customers are limited to a maximum of five open payment plans for five garments at any one time. You will receive an email invoice with a link to pay the invoice every month until the garment is paid off. Payment plans are best managed with a customer account on our website where you can track your plans and pay off plans early when possible

Pockets types

Bib

Rectangle pocket sewn to the middle front of the bib. Pocket opening at the top of pocket

Back Patch

Two rectangle pockets sewn symmetrically to the back of the garment. Pocket openings at the top of pockets

Front Patch

Two rectangle pockets sewn symmetrically to the front of the garment. Pocket openings at the top of pockets

Bound

Slash pocket with two visible lips, with a hidden pocket bag attached to the back. Usually in pairs, can be on the front of a garment or back

Round

Round pockets have a small round opening. The pocket starts at the waistband and curves round toward the outseam

Classic

Classic pockets have a large opening that sits at an angle. The pocket starts at the waistband and angles down toward the outseam

Side Seam

Pockets that are sewn into the side seam of the garment. The most discreet type of pocket with a vertical opening

Provide your own fabric

Customers are welcome to provide their own fabric for design your own garments. We require our customers to contact us first to ascertain whether their chosen fabric is appropriate for their chosen garment style. We have some guidelines for our customers to follow regarding choosing a fabric for your garment. We do not work with stretch fabrics, like jersey or knit fabrics, and the fabrics provided by customers must be culturally appropriate to the wearer’s identity. Customers with fabric already in their possession are asked to send in the fabric dimensions, an image of the fabric and their own measurements as we can then advise what is possible in your fabric. Customers looking to purchase their own fabric with a garment in mind are advised to contact us with their measurements and garment and features of choice. Quilted (fabric type)

A fabric which consists of two or three layers of fabric which are stitched at regular intervals which form usually a diamond pattern. The middle layer is usually wadding with a cotton upper but other fabrics can be used outer fabric such as water resistant fabrics.

Resale

Resale is a section on our website which lists second hand Emperor’s Old Clothes garments for sale which existing customers are ready to part with. Resale garments are priced to reflect their condition and all resale have a minimum price but are ‘Pay what you feel’. Resale garments can be altered at an extra set cost. You can find out more here. Reservations

‘Reservations’ reference our reservation system. Fabrics that have been listed on our Instagram account @emperorsfabrics are available to reserve for 3 days, or 7 days if you are a member of our ‘MyEmperors mailing list’. Reservation times allow customers to think their order through and contact customer service with questions before placing their orders. If you are placing a design your own garment order via our fabric filter you are not required to reserve your fabric first. Please have a read of our FAQs or get in touch if you have any questions

Reversible

Reversible garments are garments that can be worn two ways by turning the garment inside out. There is no true inside of a reversible garment. The only Emperor’s garments that can be made reversible are jackets and coats. You can design your here

Satin (fabric type)

A fabric which is woven in the satin weave which produces a shiny, glossy surface and a dull back. It is a fabric which can be made from many different materials which give the fabric different qualities such as drape and durability

Seated fit

Seated fit is a style of fit for trouser garments for people who are mainly seated or wheelchair users. Seated fit give more space in the back rise of the garment, making the trousers more comfortable for those who are seated for long periods of time

Secret pyjamas (Emperor's slang)

Secret pyjamas is Emperor’s slang for when a garment has been designed to be as comfortable as possible to emulate the feel of wearing your pyjamas while looking dressed and presentable. Fabrics used to create this effect are often cottons, brushed cottons or loungewear. Features chosen for these styles of designs are relaxed fit, elasticated waistband and fully elasticated waistband. You can design yours here

Seersucker (fabric type)

A woven fabric with a pattern, often striped or checkered, made from crinkled and smooth sections to create its distinctive texture. Often made from cotton or cotton mix fibers, come in a wide variety of weights and patterns.

Sheer

Unlined garment

A sheer garment that can be seen through and is used as a layering piece. Fabrics used for this style garment could be tulle, sheer chiffons, organdy or chiffon silks

Cotton lined garment

A sheer garment that has a cotton lining to stop the garment being see through. A choice of lining colour is available

A sheer garment that uses a main fabric from the back catalogue as its lining to stop the garment from being sheer

Mix N Match (add a feature) to a garment

A garment that uses a sheer fabric as a feature fabric, such as for sheer frills, sleeves or other sections of the garment

Shoulder Ties

Attached Shoulder in Same Fabric

Long ties attached to the front and back shoulder seam of both sides of the garment. Can be tied together in a knot or bow. If the ties are not connected the shoulder seam would not be attached. Perfect for chest feeding

Attached Shoulder in a Contrast Fabric

Long ties attached to the front and back shoulder seam of both sides of the garment in a contrast fabric to the main fabric of the garment. Can be tied together in a knot or bow. If the ties are not connected the shoulder seam would not be attached. Perfect for chest feeding

Unattached Shoulder in Same Fabric

Unattached ties are not sewn to the garment and are decorative ties that can be attached in a bow at the shoulder seam of a garment

Silk (fabric type)

A natural woven, protein based fiber that comes from the cocoon of a silkworm or other insects. Comes in a wide variety of weights, drapes and textures.

Silk Garments

Silk garments are made with our silk chiffon fabric. They are very delicate garments and can be designed sheer or with linings. Silk chiffon can only be used for the following garment styles; Tea dress, Gathered skirt, Croptop, Tee and Gathered two pieces

Silk garments with a lining

A lined silk garment is a garment that is made with silk which has been lined with one of our cotton linings, cupro linings or has been lined from another 'main fabric' from our back catalogue. There is an applicable surcharge to add alongside the appropriate lining charge for your garment. A silk garment that has a lining will stop the garment being see through. A choice of lining colour is available depending on what type of lining you choose. You can purchase the surcharge here

Sizes

At Emperor’s we try to be as inclusive as possible by making made to measure clothing for any body type with our design your own service. Our size guide ranges from UK size 4-6 to 30-32. We use our size guide as a reference for customers to use to aid them in choosing fabrics for garments, however all Emperor’s design your own garments are made to measure using customers self provided measurements

The A-line skirt design is a gentle flared skirt which follows the shape of a capital A. The skirt has a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. Circle skirt

The circle skirt design is a voluminous skirt design. It is cut into the shape of a circle and flares out with lots of volume. This style is smooth at the waist and flares out at the hem. The pencil skirt design is a fitted skirt which follows the shape of the legs and is traditionally hemmed just under the knee in length. Sweater vest crop top is Emperor's slang for a crop top that is designed in the style of a sweater vest. The design is often made in a thicker sturdy fabric such as a wool or corduroy. The features chosen for this design are, V neck, sleeveless, relaxed fit and no zip. You can design yours here

Sweatshirting (fabric type)

A fabric which is made from a cotton and polyester blend. The fabric has a soft and fuzzy inside which makes the fabric feel cosy and traps warmth.The top of the fabric is smooth. The fabric is a knitted weave which gives the fabric s small bit of stretch

Tabard crop top' (Emperor's slang)

Tabard crop top is Emperor’s slang for a crop top which is open at the side seams and held together by ties. Ties can be our classic 2 cm wide or you can upgrade to off menu large ties which are 5 cm in width. You can design yours here

Three-pieces (Emperor's slang)

Three pieces is Emperor’s slang for a full outfit of three garments that consists of one fabric. Sometimes a second fabric is included for linings and other features such as frills. Often the garments are a cropped jacket or coat, a crop top and a skirt or trouser of some type. You can design yours here

Tiered strap dress

The tiered strap dress design which combines the strap crop top with our tiered skirt. The bodice has straps across the shoulder and are custom made to your preference with thick or thin straps available. The bodice is fully lined with cotton lining or you can upgrade to a cupro lining. The skirt of the dress is cut into three sections of fabric which are gathered and sewn together to create volume with each layer. Each layer adds to the volume, causing the tiers to flare out more at each tier. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, ties, fastenings, frills and pockets. The tiered strap trapeze dress design combines the trapeze strap dress with a tiered dress. The entire dress is cut into three sections of fabric which are gathered and sewn together to create volume with each layer. Each layer adds to the volume, causing the tiers to flare out more at each tier. Each tier is flared in a trapeze style. Tiered two-piece

The classic crop top is a top which has been cropped at around the waistline. There are darts which give the crop top shape. The fit of the crop top is customisable with relaxed fit or a more fitted silhouette being available. Classic crop tops can also be customisable with various necklines, sleeves, ties and frills. Strap crop top

Tee

The classic tee is an Emperors take on the classic jersey tee. The tee design is a loose fit top in non stretch fabric which falls straight from minimal bust shaping to the top of the hip. There is no waist shaping. A trapeze fit is also available of this style which involves more volume due to the tee flaring out from the bust line. Classic tees can be customisable with various necklines, sleeves, ties and frills. You can design your here

Wrap over crop top

The wrap over crop top design is where the front of the top is in two halves that cross over each other by wrapping one side of the top over the other and tying it at the waist. The two fronts are cut into triangle shapes wrapping around your waist creating a V- shaped neckline. There are internal ties and external ties which fasten the garment together. Wrap over crop tops can be customisable with sleeves, shoulder ties and frills. You can design yours here

Culottes

The culottes design is a high waisted trouser with a more fitted silhouette around the waist and hips which then falls down straight from the hips to a cropped length. Culottes usually are hemmed at the mid calf. There is no tapering of the trouser leg. The culottes have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. A taller waistband is available as an off menu item on request. All trousers can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. You can design yours here

Tulle (fabric type): A lightweight, sheer, net-like fabric. Can be made from a wide variety of materials such as silk, nylon and polyester. Comes in a variety of different stiffness and net hole size. Has a delicate texture and airy appearance.

Tulle options

Tulle garments are made with tulle fabric. They are very delicate garments and can be designed sheer or with linings. Tulle can only be used for the following garment styles; Tea dress, Gathered skirt, Croptop, Tee and Gathered two pieces

Unlined garment

An unlined tulle garment has no linings and is therefore sheer. This style can be used as a layering piece in your wardrobe

Cotton lined garment

A cotton lined tulle garment is a garment that is made with tulle which has been lined with our cotton lining. There is a surcharge to add this on top of the lining the garment charge. A sheer garment that has a cotton lining to stop the garment being see through. A choice of lining colour is available. You can purchase the surcharge here

Another main fabric lining

A tulle garment with another main fabric for its lining is when a tulle garment is made with a lining fabric which has been chosen from the back catalogue. A main fabric lining will stop the garment from being sheer. There is a surcharge to using a main fabric as a lining fabric. You can purchase the surcharge here

Mix N Match (add a feature) to a garment \

Mix and Match tulle feature is when a garment uses the tulle fabric for a mix and match garment. Tulle features can include sleeves, frills and skirts on dresses. You can purchase the surcharge here

The A-line two piece is a combination of the classic crop top design and the A-line skirt. Both garments are usually in the same fabric but mix and match is available. Velvet (fabric type)

A soft, lux woven fabric with a short pile (strands of thread standing up from the base fabric to give a hairy like texture). Velvet comes in a wide variety of fibers, such as cotton, silk, viscose, nylon and polyester. Comes in different weights and drapes.

Viscose (fabric type)

A natural cellulose fiber made from wood pulp and chemical processes, Making viscose a semi natural woven fabric. Comes in a wide variety of weights, drapes and textures.

Viscose-mix (fabric type): A woven fabric that combines viscose with other fiber types. Sometimes synthetic fibers, such as polyester or elastane. Sometimes natural fibers, such as cotton, silk or wool. Comes in a wide variety of weights and textures.

Weekend dad (Emperor's slang)

Weekend dad is Emperor’s slang for Louisa. It is referencing when she does customer service at the weekend or an evening live during the week.

Wool (fabric type)

A natural woven, protein based fiber that comes from the fleece of animals like sheep, goats and camels. Comes in a wide variety of weights, drapes and textures.

Wool-mix (fabric type)

A woven fabric that combines wool with other fiber types. Sometimes synthetic fibers, such as polyester or acrylic. Sometimes natural fibers, such as cotton, silk or viscose. Comes in a wide variety of weights and textures.

Loungewear wrapover jumpsuits

The Loungewear wrapover jumpsuits are jumpsuits made from our loungewear sweatshirting. Loungewear garments have no fastening or linings and are relaxed fit. Loungewear jumpsuits are customisable with sleeves, frills, pockets and cuffs. You can design yours here

Zips

Hidden zip fastening

Zip is sewn into the fold of the classic pocket. Moving the zip from the side seam to the mid leg. Zip is hidden from view by the pocket bag. Poppers + Hooks and Bars are used to secure the waistband

Inivisible zip

Zip is sewn to the edge of zip teeth to produce an invisible seam. Zip cannot be seen from outside of the garment

Concealed zip

Zip is sewn with garments fabric overlapping the zip to conceal it from view

Front zip on jumpsuit

Zip is sewn in trouser fly style with a large fabric lip covering the zip. Zip is from the neckline down to the crotch

Zips on both sides

Zips are sewn into both of the two side seams of a crop top to aid mobility and also to aid in breastfeeding/chestfeeding. You can select our zip options alongside the rest of your preferred garment features when you design your own garment
