UNATTACHED SUSPENDERS
Unattached suspenders are dungaree straps that are separate to a garment and attach via either buttons and buttonholes or clips to the waistband of the garment. They are attactable at the waistband or the garment and run up the body sitting on the shoulders. They stitched at the back where they cross over for stability. They are available as a separate accessory or as part of a garment. You can design yours here
UNATTACHED SHOULDER TIES
Unattached ties are not sewn to the garment and are decorative ties that can be attached in a bow at the shoulder seam of a garment. You can design yours here
- Alterations
A service we offer to our customers if you find your garments do not fit just right or how they expected, or if your body changes over time. Alterations for ‘design your own’ garments are part of the price of the original garment if the customer lets us know immediately when they receive the garment (must be within one month of the shipping date). Alterations requested outside of this window are subject to charges. Please contact us via Instagram DM or email info@theemperorsoldclothes.co.uk for any alteration queries. Please note we only alter Emperor's garments

Wrapover
Bodice front is cut into two halves diagonally that wrap over each other creating a V neck. The skirt of a wrapover garment has two skirt fronts which attach to the two bodice fronts. Garment is fastened with inner and outer ties
- Boilersuit style jumpsuit' (Emperor's slang)
‘Boilersuit style jumpsuit’ is Emperor's slang for a jumpsuit which is reminiscent of a boilersuit. Features of our boilersuit style jumpsuit include classic neckline, front zip fastening, classic pockets, shorts sleeves, patch pockets and classic leg. You can design yours here

Two large ties that are at the back of the garment neckline that tie the two sides of the back of the garment together to create a bow

Small ties that tie together to form small bows that hold the front of a top or bodice together. They are placed at the neckline, the mid bust and the waist

Ties down the side of the top/bodice
Small ties that tie together to form small bows that hold the sides of the top or bodice together. They are placed at the armhole, at the waist and at a midpoint between those points
- Brocade (fabric type)
A lux woven fabric with an intricate raised or embossed pattern. Often the raised motif features metallic or shiny threads. Brocade can be made out of many different fibers such as cotton, silk, taffeta, synthetic fibers and metallic threads.
- Broderie Anglaise (fabric type)
A woven cotton or cotton mix base fabric with surface embroidery and holes with stitching around them, usually making up a floral or border pattern. Comes in a wide variety of patterns, weights and colours although most commonly the stitching is the same colour as the base fabric.
- Business dungarees’ (Emperor’s slang)
‘Business Dungarees’ is Emperor's slang for classic dungarees which have been made in a more formal or traditionally business style fabric. Fabrics used include wools, suitings, pinstripe or block colour and often do not have added features, keeping the silhouette of the dungarees more streamlined. You can design yours here

- Cecily trousers' (Emperor's slang)
‘Cecily Trousers’ is Emperor's slang for a pair of Cecily's classic trousers. Features of ‘Cecily Trousers’ include side seam pockets, cropped length, elasticated waistband and leg hem frills. You can design yours here
- Cheesecloth (fabric type)
A loosely woven cotton fabric. Single layer cheesecloth is usually fairly lightweight, has small gaps in the weave and is translucent. Double layer cheesecloth (double gauze) is two layers connected together in the weaving process, still a lightweight fabric but less visible holes in the weave and more opaque. Cheesecloth also has a crinkled texture, which is seen as one of its charms.
- Circular packaging
At Emperor’s we use circular packaging to try to reduce our environmental footprint. We use reusable bags made from a plastic canvas which is hardy enough for multiple uses. We ask UK customers to please send back the packaging if they have no use for it - for the cost of a stamp - so we can reuse the packaging. Customers outside of the UK are asked to re-use the packaging as they see fit or if they are feeling generous, to post it back to the UK. We appreciate this may not be financially or physically viable for all customers

The Cropped jacket design is a jacket that has been cropped to the waist. The cropped jacket has a classic neckline which meets at the neck with the fronts of the jacket meeting without overlapping. - Contrast cuffs
Contrast cuffs are fabric that is sewn the inside of trouser garments leg hems which are revealed when they are folded up. Extra length can be added to trouser legs to give space to show contrast cuffs whilst not losing too much trouser length. Contrast cuffs are available in limited block colours. Main fabric can be requested as an off menu charge
- Corduroy (fabric type)
A densely woven fabric with parallel ridges on the surface to create its distinctive texture. Often made from cotton or cotton mix fibers. Comes in a wide variety of weights, drapes and ridge sizes.
- Corset-style crop top' (Emperor's slang)
‘Corset-style’ crop top is Emperor's slang for classic crop top or strap crop top which has been deliberately cut to have a front gap reminiscent of historical styles of corsets or stays and use the feature of front bow tie fastenings to tie the top closed. Features of ‘corset-style’ crop tops are for a classic crop top; deep square neckline, front ties, 2 to 4 inch gap at centre front. On a strap crop top the features are; deeper neckline, front ties, 2-4 inch gap at centre front. You can design yours here
- Cotton (fabric type)
A breathable, natural woven fabric that is made from the fibers of the cotton plant. Comes in a wide variety of weights and textures.
- Cotton-mix (fabric type)
A woven fabric that combines cotton with other fiber types. Sometimes synthetic fibers, such as polyester or elastane. Sometimes natural fibers, such as wool, silk or viscose. Comes in a wide variety of weights and textures.
- Crotch Reinforcement
Crotch reinforcement are cotton panels that are sewn into the crotch of a garment. This strengthens the crotch of a garment to help with the wear of the fabric and helps with longevity of the garment. Crotch panels come in two different weights: classic for medium to heavier weight fabrics and lightweight for lightweight or very drapey fabrics. Black or white crotch panels are chosen based on the main garment fabric

Drape is a term that refers to how fabric hangs under its own weight. Drape can drastically change the feel of a garment and is important because it affects the garment’s fit and style.

The pencil dress is a design that combines the classic bodice with a pencil skirt. The silhouette of a pencil dress has a fitted skirt which follows the shape of the legs and is hummed just under the knee in length.There is an black slit approximately 5 inches to aid in movement. Shift dresses
Our shift dress design is a straight cut dress with no waist seam which has minimal shaping and hangs from the shoulders. This dress has no fastenings as it is a loose fit dress. All dresses can be customisable with choices of sleeve, frills and pockets. You can design yours here
Skater dresses
The skater dress design combines the classic bodice with a full circle skirt. The skirt of the dress is cut in the shape of a circle giving lots of volume while keeping the waist smooth as the skirt flares out. Tea dresses
The Tea dress design combines the classic bodice with a gathered skirt. The classic Emperor’s dungaree design is a combination of our classic Emperor's trousers and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the trousers. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The trouser part of the dungarees is a high waisted trouser which has a comfortable ease around the hips and down the leg while also following the line of the leg and tapering in gently. The trousers have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. Dungaree-culottes
The dungaree culottes design is a combination of our culottes design and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the culottes. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The culottes part of the dungarees is a high waisted trouser with a more fitted silhouette around the waist and hips which then falls down straight from the hips to a cropped length. Culottes usually are hemmed at the mid calf. There is no tapering of the trouser leg. The culottes have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. You can design yours here
Playsuits
The playsuit design is a combination of our shorts design and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the shorts. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The shorts part of the dungarees is a high waisted short with a more fitted silhouette around the waist and hips which then falls down straight from the hips to a mid thigh length. There is no tapering of the shorts leg. The shorts have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. You can design yours here
Wide leg dungarees
The wide leg dungarees design is a combination of our wide leg trouser design and dungaree features. There is a front bib which is attached at the waistband of the wide leg trousers. The straps cross over at the back and come over the shoulders to attach to the front bib. There are a variety of dungaree fastenings such as clips, buttons and buttonholes, or metal buttons and dungaree clips. The wide leg trouser part of the dungarees is a high waisted wide leg trouser with a more fitted silhouette around the waist and hips which then falls down straight to the ankle from the hips. There is no tapering of the trouser leg.The wide leg dungarees have a 4 cm/ 1.5 inches waistband which sits at the waist. All dungarees can be customisable with pockets, adding elastic to the waistband, belt loops, contrast cuffs or adding frills. You can design yours here
Dungaree dresses
Our dungaree dresses are dresses which have our dungaree features of clips, buttons and clips or buttons and buttonholes with front bib straps that cross over at the back. The skirts of these dresses can range from our mini skirt, A-line skirt, gathered skirt and circle skirt. All dungaree dresses can be customisable with choices of frills, shoulder ties and pockets. - Elasticated options
- Waistband
Elastic added to the back of an extended waistband to allow a fluctuation in size. Elasticated waistbands can have an extra three, five or eight inches to allow garment to stretch for comfort and body needs. Or we also offer a fully elasticated waist available for garments in suitable fabrics - please get in touch to find out more about specific fabric suitability
Loungewear and PJ waistband
Waistbands for loungewear and pyjama garments have more elastic in the waistband to give them more ease for taking on and off as these styles have no zips. Elastic starts in the waistband at mid leg and works round the back of the waistband to the other side mid leg
StrapsElastic added to extended straps at the back under the crossover where the two straps meet to give more ease of movement and to make dungaree garments more comfortable and pull less when seated. This is a popular addition to those who spend a lot of time seated

- Extra tall waistband
Extra tall waistbands are an off menu item that is available on request. Standard waistbands on our skirts and trousers are 4 cm tall. Extra tall waistbands are approximately 10 cm but height can be chosen by customers. There is a surcharge of £15 for an extra tall waistband. If you are interested in upgrading your waistband to an extra tall waistband, please get in contact.

Poppers on Coats
Metal snap fastening. Two connecting parts of the popper to fasten the two front edges together
Buttons + buttonholes on Coats
Buttons holes sewn on one side of the front edge of the coat. Plastic buttons sewn onto the other opposite front edge of the coat.
Buttons + buttonholes on Jumpsuits
Buttonholes sewn onto the shoulder strap overlap. Plastic button sewn on to the other end of the shoulder strap.

Popper
Metal snap fastening. Two connecting parts of the popper to fasten the waistband together.
Hook + bar
Metal fastening. Two connecting parts of the hook and bar perfect for waistbands with elastic.
Hidden zip fastening
Zip is sewn into the fold of the classic pocket. Moving the zip from the side seam to the mid leg. Zip is hidden from view by the pocket bag. Poppers + Hooks and Bars are used to secure the waistband.

Attached shoulder ties
A type of strap that ties on the shoulder to create bows. Attached shoulder ties on the front of dungaree items come from the bib or front waistband. The back ties come from the back waistband, cross over the back where they are secured with stitching and tie at the shoulder to the front ties.

Trapeze fit
Trapeze fit is where a top or dress is cut in a flaring out shape from the shoulder/ bust area causing lots of volume in the hem area
Boxy fit
Boxy fit is where a crop top is cut with extra ease in the body and waist of a garment. The shaping of the garment in more square and boxy than regular fit
- Flannel (fabric type)
A soft woven fabric. Usually made from cotton or cotton mix fibres. Has a fuzzy finish on one or both sides. Also can be called brushed cotton.

- Floor to ceiling' (Emperor's slang)
‘Floor to ceiling’ is Emperor's slang for referencing when a fabric is being used for a garment that is being designed to cover the whole body. For example, a full length trapeze dress with classic neckline and extra length to floor length. Another example could be one fabric being used for a two-piece which has full length trousers and a cropped jacket

Minimal gather is when the gathered fabric at the waist of a gathered skirt, teadress, tiered dress or other dress-style with a gathered waist is one and a half times the amount of fabric than the bodice waist measurement. This gives the skirt a more smooth appearance and straighter silhouette

IG live refers to Instagram live broadcasts in which team members show new fabrics, designs or features to customers. - Organdy (fabric type)
A lightweight woven sheer, stiff fabric, usually made of cotton. Organdy is given an acid treatment to keep its crisp and starched finish.
- Organdy options
Organdy garments are made with organdy fabric. They are very stiff garments that are semi sheer. Organdy can only be used for skirts, dresses and tops
Unlined garment
An unlined organdy garment has no linings and is therefore semi sheer. This style can be used as a layering piece in your wardrobe
Cotton lined garment
A cotton lined organdy garment is a garment that is made with organdy which has been lined with our cotton lining to stop the garment from being see through. There is a surcharge to add this on top of the lining the garment charge. A choice of colour is available. You can purchase the surcharge here
Another main fabric lining
An organdy garment with another main fabric for its lining is when an organdy garment is made with a lining fabric which has been chosen from the back catalogue.There is a surcharge to using a main fabric as a lining fabric. You can purchase the surcharge here
Mix N Match (add a feature) to a garment
Mix and Match organdy feature is when a garment uses the organdy fabric for a mix and match garment. Organdy features can include sleeves, frills and skirts on dresses. You can purchase the surcharge here

- Party pants' (Emperor's slang)
Party pants is Emperor’s slang for any emperor’s trouser style which has been made in a fabric which is often associated with party wear. Fabrics used include fabrics with metallic threads woven throughout the weave, silks, satins, taffetas and other party fabrics. You can design yours here
- Pay what you feel
‘Pay what you feel’ is the option to choose what price you’d like to pay for certain products including resale garments and other limited items on the website. This option involves a minimum price which is stated under the ‘choose your price’ box. Customers can opt to pay above the minimum price if they have the means to
- Payment plans
Our payment plans are designed to help split the cost of design your own garments into more manageable payments. Our payment plans can be split across 2-6 months. Select the ‘Pay deposit’ option at the bottom of the garment page when placing your order to create a payment plan. Your payment plan garment will be added to the production queue, created and shipped after the final payment has been made. Customers are limited to a maximum of five open payment plans for five garments at any one time. You will receive an email invoice with a link to pay the invoice every month until the garment is paid off. Payment plans are best managed with a customer account on our website where you can track your plans and pay off plans early when possible

- Provide your own fabric
Customers are welcome to provide their own fabric for design your own garments. We require our customers to contact us first to ascertain whether their chosen fabric is appropriate for their chosen garment style. We have some guidelines for our customers to follow regarding choosing a fabric for your garment. We do not work with stretch fabrics, like jersey or knit fabrics, and the fabrics provided by customers must be culturally appropriate to the wearer’s identity. Customers with fabric already in their possession are asked to send in the fabric dimensions, an image of the fabric and their own measurements as we can then advise what is possible in your fabric. Customers looking to purchase their own fabric with a garment in mind are advised to contact us with their measurements and garment and features of choice. You can find out more and get in touch here

- Quilted (fabric type)
A fabric which consists of two or three layers of fabric which are stitched at regular intervals which form usually a diamond pattern. The middle layer is usually wadding with a cotton upper but other fabrics can be used outer fabric such as water resistant fabrics.

- Resale
Resale is a section on our website which lists second hand Emperor’s Old Clothes garments for sale which existing customers are ready to part with. Resale garments are priced to reflect their condition and all resale have a minimum price but are ‘Pay what you feel’. Resale garments can be altered at an extra set cost. You can find out more here. - Reservations
‘Reservations’ reference our reservation system. Fabrics that have been listed on our Instagram account @emperorsfabrics are available to reserve for 3 days, or 7 days if you are a member of our ‘MyEmperors mailing list’. Reservation times allow customers to think their order through and contact customer service with questions before placing their orders. If you are placing a design your own garment order via our fabric filter you are not required to reserve your fabric first. Please have a read of our FAQs or get in touch if you have any questions
- Reversible
Reversible garments are garments that can be worn two ways by turning the garment inside out. There is no true inside of a reversible garment. The only Emperor’s garments that can be made reversible are jackets and coats. You can design your here

- Satin (fabric type)
A fabric which is woven in the satin weave which produces a shiny, glossy surface and a dull back. It is a fabric which can be made from many different materials which give the fabric different qualities such as drape and durability
- Seated fit
Seated fit is a style of fit for trouser garments for people who are mainly seated or wheelchair users. Seated fit give more space in the back rise of the garment, making the trousers more comfortable for those who are seated for long periods of time
- Secret pyjamas (Emperor's slang)
Secret pyjamas is Emperor’s slang for when a garment has been designed to be as comfortable as possible to emulate the feel of wearing your pyjamas while looking dressed and presentable. Fabrics used to create this effect are often cottons, brushed cottons or loungewear. Features chosen for these styles of designs are relaxed fit, elasticated waistband and fully elasticated waistband. You can design yours here
- Seersucker (fabric type)
A woven fabric with a pattern, often striped or checkered, made from crinkled and smooth sections to create its distinctive texture. Often made from cotton or cotton mix fibers, come in a wide variety of weights and patterns.

A sheer garment that can be seen through and is used as a layering piece. Fabrics used for this style garment could be tulle, sheer chiffons, organdy or chiffon silks

Silk garments are made with our silk chiffon fabric. They are very delicate garments and can be designed sheer or with linings. Silk chiffon can only be used for the following garment styles; Tea dress, Gathered skirt, Croptop, Tee and Gathered two pieces. You can design your own here
Silk garments with a lining
A lined silk garment is a garment that is made with silk which has been lined with one of our cotton linings, cupro linings or has been lined from another 'main fabric' from our back catalogue. There is an applicable surcharge to add alongside the appropriate lining charge for your garment. A silk garment that has a lining will stop the garment being see through. A choice of lining colour is available depending on what type of lining you choose. You can purchase the surcharge here
- Sizes
At Emperor’s we try to be as inclusive as possible by making made to measure clothing for any body type with our design your own service. Our size guide ranges from UK size 4-6 to 30-32. We use our size guide as a reference for customers to use to aid them in choosing fabrics for garments, however all Emperor’s design your own garments are made to measure using customers self provided measurements

Wrap over crop top
The wrap over crop top design is where the front of the top is in two halves that cross over each other by wrapping one side of the top over the other and tying it at the waist. The two fronts are cut into triangle shapes wrapping around your waist creating a V- shaped neckline. There are internal ties and external ties which fasten the garment together. A lightweight, sheer, net-like fabric. Can be made from a wide variety of materials such as silk, nylon and polyester. Comes in a variety of different stiffness and net hole size. Has a delicate texture and airy appearance.

Tulle garments are made with tulle fabric. They are very delicate garments and can be designed sheer or with linings. Tulle can only be used for the following garment styles; Tea dress, Gathered skirt, Croptop, Tee and Gathered two pieces
Unlined garment
An unlined tulle garment has no linings and is therefore sheer. This style can be used as a layering piece in your wardrobe
Cotton lined garment
A cotton lined tulle garment is a garment that is made with tulle which has been lined with our cotton lining. There is a surcharge to add this on top of the lining the garment charge. A sheer garment that has a cotton lining to stop the garment being see through. A choice of lining colour is available. You can purchase the surcharge here
Another main fabric lining
A tulle garment with another main fabric for its lining is when a tulle garment is made with a lining fabric which has been chosen from the back catalogue. Hidden zip fastening
Zip is sewn into the fold of the classic pocket. Moving the zip from the side seam to the mid leg. Zip is hidden from view by the pocket bag. Poppers + Hooks and Bars are used to secure the waistband
Inivisible zip
Zip is sewn to the edge of zip teeth to produce an invisible seam. Zip cannot be seen from outside of the garment
Concealed zip
Zip is sewn with garments fabric overlapping the zip to conceal it from view
Front zip on jumpsuit
Zip is sewn in trouser fly style with a large fabric lip covering the zip. Zip is from the neckline down to the crotch
Zips on both sides
